New Shriners Children’s Outreach Clinic Expands Access to Patients
Shriners Children’s is making it easier for patients to receive the best care possible with their new pediatric orthopedic outreach clinic in Champaign, IL. In collaboration with Carle Health, doctors from Shriners Children’s St. Louis and Chicago are able to provide pediatric orthopedic care to both new and existing patients.

Shriners Children’s is a nonprofit healthcare system specializing in pediatric care of patients with orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate, as well as routine injuries such as broken bones or sports injuries. The system is dedicated to providing advanced, research-based treatment regardless of families’ ability to pay or insurance status, to ensure all children receive the best possible care.

As a central Illinois health system, Carle Health delivers accessible, exceptional service to its surrounding communities. Always focused on its North Star - providing the best care possible for patients - the system is driven by a deep philanthropic spirit to solve real-world health issues. Together, the two health systems hope to bring specialized pediatric orthopedic care closer to home for families in East Central Illinois.

The quarterly clinic, located at the Carle Outpatient Services at The Fields, at 3105 Fields South Drive in Champaign IL, first began in March of 2025 and allows physicians to see 12-16 patients in one day, or up to 64 patients a year. Patients have access to care, including follow-up visits after surgery, routine check-ups, and consultations for those referred to a specialist, but don’t have access to a pediatric orthopedic surgeon in their community.

Mark Venable, Hospital Administrator for Shriners Children’s St. Louis, said these clinics are important for patients who have issues getting to and from the hospital.

“One of the top five social determinants of health is access to care,” said Venable. “If we can bring a practitioner to the community and help eliminate that barrier, then we’re providing accessible care that patients can really benefit from.”

"Carle Health is committed to providing excellent, patient-centered care," said Caleb Miller, senior vice president, Carle Specialty and Ambulatory Care. "Supporting Shriners Children’s in making specialty care available where patients need it aligns with our mission to be a trusted healthcare partner. We're excited to make this service more accessible to those who wouldn't be able to receive care without facing difficulties with travel."

Craig McGhee, Midwest Market Administrator of Shriners Children’s, said the partnership bringing Chicago and St. Louis providers to central Illinois aligns with the nonprofit healthcare system’s mission of giving patients the best care possible, while also making the appointments more convenient and cost-effective.

“Children are not small adults,” McGhee explained. “It’s important for them, when possible, to receive care by physicians trained in managing pediatric growth plate injuries and other childhood orthopedic concerns.”

Families will have two more opportunities to receive orthopedic care at Shriners Children’s and Carle Health partnership clinic this year. Shriners Children’s has outreach clinics in more than 100 locations across the U.S.
